When can babies have chicken liver?

Liver may feature in some complementary-feeding traditions, but it is concentrated in vitamin A and needs an appropriate portion and frequency. Ask your clinician or dietitian how it fits your child's diet and supplements. Do not offer it daily or treat a regional frequency as a universal dose.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve chicken liver

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Cook chicken liver all the way through, then mince finely or blend into porridge or mashed vegetables.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Mix finely chopped cooked chicken liver into rice or patties.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Offer small pieces of cooked chicken liver in family dishes.

Choking & food safety

  • Cook chicken liver thoroughly throughout; do not serve it pink.
  • Liver is concentrated in vitamin A and is not a daily food. Hong Kong infant guidance limits liver to no more than once every 2 weeks.
  • The frequency does not establish an infant portion; ask for an individual recommendation that accounts for supplements.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does chicken liver bring to a meal?

Chicken liver provides iron, folate, vitamin B12 and concentrated vitamin A. It is an occasional food whose portion needs consideration, rather than a daily nutritional booster.

Allergy notes

This plain ingredient is outside the common allergen groups highlighted here, but allergy is still possible. Recipes and packaged versions may add common allergens. Check ingredients and seek advice after a suspected reaction rather than using a missing tag as an allergen-free promise.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about chicken liver

Can chicken liver be pink in the middle?

No. Cook chicken liver thoroughly throughout. A smooth texture or browned outside does not prove the center has been properly cooked.

How often can a baby eat chicken liver?

Liver should not be a daily food because of concentrated vitamin A. Hong Kong infant guidance uses no more than once every 2 weeks; ask for an individual portion and feeding plan.
