Privacy Policy
For the Highchair Chef iPhone app and highchairchef.com · Last updated 27 October 2026
Draft. This page is not final and will change before Highchair Chef launches.
Highchair Chef helps parents keep track of the solid foods their baby tries. It is made by Simple Software Technologies, LLC ("we"). We built it to collect as little as possible: there are no accounts, and your records live in your own iCloud. This policy explains what happens to your information.
The short version
- No accounts. Your records live on your iPhone and in your own iCloud, where we can't see them.
- Photos only with your permission. They are sent for analysis only if you say yes, and we don't keep them.
- No ads or tracking. Nothing is sold or shared for advertising, and nothing follows you across apps or websites.
- You're in control. Delete one baby, or everything, from Settings in the app.
Your records stay in your iCloud
Everything you enter is stored on your iPhone and in your own iCloud account (Apple's CloudKit private database). That includes your baby's name, birth date and region, health details you choose to add (such as known allergies, eczema, G6PD deficiency or a kidney condition), the meals and foods you log, notes, reactions, meal photos and the optional profile photo of your baby.
The profile photo is only shown in the app, and on a meal report if you choose to add it. It is never sent for photo analysis. We don't run a user database and cannot see or access these records.
Photo analysis, only with your permission
Photo analysis is part of Highchair Chef Plus, and your first 3 analysed meals are free. Before the first photo is sent, the app explains what happens and asks for your permission. You can turn it off any time in Settings → Photo analysis.
In detail, when photo analysis is on:
- The app sends the smaller, metadata-free photos to our server with any note you added, a list of food names from the app's catalog and your device language. When a meal starts, it sends the before photo and note so the foods can be named. When the meal ends, it sends both photos, both notes and the names of the foods on the plate.
- Our server passes them to OpenAI's API, which estimates the foods and how much was eaten, and returns the result to the app.
- We don't store the photos or notes. Where the API offers it, we ask OpenAI not to store the request (the
store: falsesetting). Under OpenAI's API data policy, OpenAI may keep API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse, then deletes them, and does not use API data to train its models. - Photos can show your baby or other people. Frame just the plate.
- Notes can mention your baby's health (for example "unwell" or "gagged"). With your permission, they are used only to describe the meal.
The same applies to past photos you choose to import.
Voice notes
A voice note is turned into text on your iPhone by Apple's on-device speech recognition. The audio is never stored or sent anywhere. The text is saved with the meal and, only if photo analysis is on, sent with the photos as described above.
What our server keeps
- Usage counters for the daily, monthly and import limits. They are keyed by a one-way hash of a random ID the app creates for your installation, or of your subscription's transaction ID, and hold only counts, the period they cover and the time of your last import. With them, the random IDs the app gives your recent meals, so a meal counts once.
- A short-lived copy of an analysis result (food names, amounts and the meal cues read from your note, such as "teething"; no photos or note text), so a retried request isn't counted twice.
- A list of refunded subscriptions: hashed transaction IDs with the refund and expiry dates, so refunded purchases stop unlocking photo analysis.
- Daily totals of requests and cost across all users, with no IDs.
- Operational logs with only the hashed ID, app version, request type and status, limits reached, token counts, estimated cost and response time. No photos, notes, food lists, names or email addresses.
Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver requests. We don't store or log it.
How long we keep things
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Your records and photos in iCloud | Until you delete them (see below) |
| Photos and notes sent for analysis | Not kept by us; up to 30 days by OpenAI |
| Short-lived analysis result | About 10 minutes |
| Meal IDs already counted | 48 hours |
| Daily and monthly counters | Until the end of the period, plus a day |
| Import allowance counter | Up to 13 months |
| Refunded-subscription list | Until the subscription would have expired, at most 13 months |
| Operational logs | As long as our hosting plan keeps them, at most 30 days |
Subscriptions
Purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details. To check your subscription, the app sends Apple's signed transaction record to our server. It describes the purchase (product, dates, transaction IDs) and does not contain your name, email address or payment details.
This website
highchairchef.com has no cookies, analytics, trackers or forms. Cloudflare hosts it and processes your IP address to deliver the pages, and may keep standard security and traffic logs under its own privacy policy.
Deleting your data and your choices
- One baby: Settings → tap the baby → Delete. This removes their meals, photos and notes from your iPhone, your iCloud and any caregiver you shared with. For a baby someone shared with you, this removes it from your iPhone only.
- Everything: Settings → Delete all data.
- Photo analysis: turn it off in Settings → Photo analysis. This withdraws your permission for future photos.
- Deleting the app removes the copy on your iPhone, but not your iCloud copy. Use the options above first, or manage iCloud storage in your iPhone's Settings.
Our server holds no records about you beyond the hashed counters above, which expire on their own. For any other request, contact us.
Legal bases and your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland: we rely on your consent for photo analysis, including any health details in notes, and you can withdraw it at any time. We rely on our legitimate interest in preventing abuse and controlling costs for the usage counters and logs, and on performing our contract with you for checking your subscription.
You can ask to access, correct or delete your data, object to processing, or withdraw consent, and you can complain to your local data protection authority.
Service providers and international transfers
- Apple: iCloud storage and sharing, App Store purchases.
- Cloudflare: hosting our server and this website.
- OpenAI: photo analysis, only with your permission.
These providers may process data in the United States and other countries, under their own data protection terms and safeguards for international transfers.
What we don't do
- No ads.
- No tracking across apps or websites.
- No selling or sharing of your data for advertising.
Children
Highchair Chef is for adult parents and caregivers, not for children. It records information about a baby, entered by the parent, which stays in the parent's iCloud except as described under "Photo analysis".
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
