When can babies have crab?

A suitable thoroughly cooked, carefully deboned or shell-free preparation can be considered once your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Use species-specific mercury and local-catch guidance. FDA/EPA child portion examples begin at age one and are not an infant serving prescription.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve crab

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Cook crab thoroughly and mince finely into porridge or mashed vegetables.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Offer finely chopped cooked crab.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Offer small chopped pieces of cooked crab.

Choking & food safety

  • Crustacean.
  • Imitation crab is a fish product with salt/additives, not crab.
  • Use a reputable supplier, cook thoroughly and remove all shells, bones and hard parts. Prepare moist fine flakes or mince to suit the child.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does crab bring to a meal?

Crab offers protein, zinc and B12, and is another way to bring shellfish into your baby's diet.

Allergy notes

Crab is a shellfish food. Crustaceans and molluscs, and individual species within them, are not interchangeable evidence of tolerance. Introduce the actual cooked food deliberately and follow an individual plan for known allergy.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about crab

Can my baby eat imitation crab as a crab introduction?

No. Imitation crab is usually a processed fish product with other ingredients and salt. It does not establish tolerance of real crab.

How do I prepare crab meat?

Cook thoroughly, remove the shell and any cartilage, then finely chop or mash the meat into a moist dish. Check bought picked meat for shell fragments too.
