When can babies have curry leaves?

A small culinary amount can flavor food after your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Remove hard, fibrous or whole pieces and disperse powders in food. These serving ideas do not cover medicinal preparations or supplements.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve curry leaves

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Temper curry leaves in oil for dal or khichdi, and remove them before serving.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Use curry leaves for flavour and remove them before serving.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Use curry leaves to flavour cooking, then remove the whole leaves before serving.

Choking & food safety

  • Use to infuse cooking, then remove whole leaves before serving.
  • Do not assume a curry-powder blend has the same ingredients as curry leaves.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does curry leaves bring to a meal?

They infuse a familiar, savory aroma into family dishes, helping babies learn home flavors early.

Allergy notes

This plain ingredient is outside the common allergen groups highlighted here, but allergy is still possible. Recipes and packaged versions may add common allergens. Check ingredients and seek advice after a suspected reaction rather than using a missing tag as an allergen-free promise.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about curry leaves

Can my baby eat whole curry leaves?

Use whole leaves to flavor cooking, then remove them before serving. They can stay tough even when the surrounding food is soft.

Are curry leaves the same as curry powder?

No. Curry powder is a blend that can include many spices and sometimes other ingredients. Check blends separately for salt and allergens.
