When can babies have ginger?

A small culinary amount can flavor food after your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Remove hard, fibrous or whole pieces and disperse powders in food. These serving ideas do not cover medicinal preparations or supplements.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve ginger

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Cook a small amount of ginger into purees, porridges or mashes to add flavour without salt.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Add finely chopped or ground ginger to shared dishes.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Use ginger as in normal family cooking.

Choking & food safety

  • Use a little finely grated or ground ginger dispersed in cooked food.
  • Remove woody slices and fibrous chunks before serving.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does ginger bring to a meal?

A touch of ginger gives gentle warmth and a new flavor to explore, without needing salt or sugar.

Allergy notes

This plain ingredient is outside the common allergen groups highlighted here, but allergy is still possible. Recipes and packaged versions may add common allergens. Check ingredients and seek advice after a suspected reaction rather than using a missing tag as an allergen-free promise.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about ginger

How much ginger flavor should I start with?

Use a little finely grated or ground ginger dispersed through a cooked meal. This guide gives culinary ideas, not a medicinal dose.

Can I leave slices of ginger in the baby's bowl?

Remove woody slices and fibrous chunks. Their job can be to flavor the pot; the baby does not need to chew them.
