When can babies have natto?

Once your baby is developmentally ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Match the texture to their ability to sit upright, bring food to the mouth and swallow; age alone does not decide the right serving form.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve natto

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Use a reputable food-grade product according to its instructions. Finely chop or mash into a familiar moist food, accounting for soy. Do not rely on a quick blanch as a safety treatment.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Finely chop the sticky beans and mix into soft rice or another familiar moist dish. Omit the salty sauce packet and check the texture carefully.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Continue adapting the sticky whole-bean texture and following the product instructions. Serve as part of a meal, without assuming larger whole beans are suitable just because the child is older.

Choking & food safety

  • Use a reputable food-grade product and follow its handling instructions.
  • Whole sticky beans need fine chopping or mashing into moist food.
  • Omit salty sauce packets and check for additional allergens; brief blanching is not a validated infant safety treatment.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does natto bring to a meal?

Chopped natto offers soy protein and vitamin K, and brings soy, a common allergen, in a traditional form.

Allergy notes

The plain food contains soy. Introduce only one new common allergen at the same meal and keep tolerated foods in the usual diet. Check the actual recipe or packet for other allergens; follow a clinician's plan for a known allergy or previous reaction.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about natto

Should I add the sauce packet from natto?

Omit salty seasoning packets for the baby's portion. Check the product because sauces can add wheat, fish, mustard or other ingredients.

Does a quick blanch make natto safe for every infant?

No validated infant safety treatment is established here. Use a reputable food-grade product as directed, and address the sticky whole-bean texture by finely chopping into moist food.
