When can babies have olive oil?

Use as an ingredient in complementary food once your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. It is not a stand-alone meal or a replacement for breast milk or infant formula. Account for its ingredients and any allergy plan.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve olive oil

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Stir a little olive oil into purees, porridge or vegetables for extra energy.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Use olive oil in cooking for the baby's portion.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Use olive oil as in family cooking.

Choking & food safety

  • Check the actual food and prepare a moist texture suited to the child.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does olive oil bring to a meal?

A little oil is an easy way to add energy and mostly unsaturated fat to small portions.

Allergy notes

This plain ingredient is outside the common allergen groups highlighted here, but allergy is still possible. Recipes and packaged versions may add common allergens. Check ingredients and seek advice after a suspected reaction rather than using a missing tag as an allergen-free promise.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about olive oil

Can I add olive oil to a baby's vegetables?

Yes, a little can be mixed into cooked food. It helps make a vegetable or grain dish less dry and adds energy without needing salt.

Should I serve olive oil on its own?

Use it as part of food rather than offering a spoonful of oil. The point is to enrich a meal, while keeping a varied mix of protein foods, produce and starches.
