When can babies have paneer?

Once your baby is developmentally ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Match the texture to their ability to sit upright, bring food to the mouth and swallow; age alone does not decide the right serving form.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve paneer

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Crumble or grate fresh paneer into dal or vegetables.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Offer thin strips of paneer simmered in sauce until soft.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Offer thin slices or thin sticks of paneer. Avoid cubes.

Choking & food safety

  • Use paneer made from pasteurised milk.
  • Crumble or grate firm paneer; avoid firm cubes.
  • Choose pasteurized products and compare salt labels. Avoid firm chunks and adjust the texture to the child.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does paneer bring to a meal?

A familiar way in many South Asian homes to add milk protein and calcium to a baby's vegetarian meals.

Allergy notes

The plain food contains milk. Introduce only one new common allergen at the same meal and keep tolerated foods in the usual diet. Check the actual recipe or packet for other allergens; follow a clinician's plan for a known allergy or previous reaction.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about paneer

How do I soften paneer for my baby?

Crumble or grate paneer into a moist dish. Firm cubes can remain rubbery even after heating, so test the texture rather than relying on cooking time.

Can I offer paneer in palak paneer?

Use a mild family version with thoroughly cooked, finely chopped spinach and crumbled paneer. Take the baby's portion before adding salt and consider every ingredient, including milk.
