When can babies have sea bass?

Consider only a clearly identified, appropriately cooked fish once your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Confirm the species, product and applicable local mercury advice first; generic names do not establish a category or an infant portion.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve sea bass

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Steam or bake sea bass until it flakes. Check carefully for bones, then mash or offer soft flakes.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Mix flakes of sea bass into a familiar moist food.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Serve flaked, deboned sea bass from the family meal.

Choking & food safety

  • Confirm the actual species: black sea bass and Chilean sea bass have different mercury categories.
  • Do not assign a mercury rating to an unidentified fish from its market name alone.
  • Cook thoroughly, remove skin and bones, and prepare moist flakes or mash.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does sea bass bring to a meal?

Sea bass supplies fish protein, but the name covers different species and nutrient profiles. Species identification matters for mercury advice as well as for understanding the food being offered.

Allergy notes

Sea bass is fish and can cause food allergy. Tolerance of another fish does not establish tolerance of every species. Introduce a clearly identified product deliberately, check other ingredients and follow a clinical plan for any known fish allergy.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about sea bass

Is all sea bass low in mercury?

No. Black sea bass and Chilean sea bass have different FDA/EPA categories, and regional market names can mean other species. Confirm the species before relying on a rating.

What if I cannot identify the sea bass species?

Choose a clearly labeled fish with established lower-mercury guidance, such as cod or salmon. A generic market name is not enough to assign a mercury category.
