When can babies have basil?

A small culinary amount can flavor food after your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months. Remove hard, fibrous or whole pieces and disperse powders in food. These serving ideas do not cover medicinal preparations or supplements.

Readiness matters: your baby should be able to stay seated with steady head control, coordinate bringing food to their mouth and swallow food. For premature babies or feeding concerns, ask your health professional.

How to serve basil

Follow your child’s feeding skills. These stages are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular texture is right for your baby.

Starting solids

Exploring smooth and mashed textures

Cook a small amount of basil into purees, porridges or mashes to add flavour without salt.

Building skills

Managing soft lumps and finger foods

Add finely chopped or ground basil to shared dishes.

More confident eaters

Practising with adapted family food

Use basil as in normal family cooking.

Choking & food safety

  • Wash, remove tough stems and mince or blend leaves into moist food.
  • Check pesto ingredients separately for nuts, milk and other allergens.

Keep your baby seated upright and supervise every bite. No preparation removes all choking risk. Read the NHS food preparation guide.

What does basil bring to a meal?

A pinch of chopped basil adds fresh flavor without salt, helping babies get used to family tastes.

Allergy notes

This plain ingredient is outside the common allergen groups highlighted here, but allergy is still possible. Recipes and packaged versions may add common allergens. Check ingredients and seek advice after a suspected reaction rather than using a missing tag as an allergen-free promise.

If your child has a known food allergy, severe eczema or a previous reaction, get individual advice before introducing the relevant food. Trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse can signal an emergency: call your local emergency number.

Common questions about basil

Can babies have basil in pesto?

Finely chopped basil can flavor food, but pesto is a mixed dish that often contains cheese and nuts. Check every ingredient rather than treating pesto as basil alone.

Should basil leaves be served whole?

For early meals, remove tough stems and finely mince or blend the leaves into food so there are no large leaves to manage.
